Intern Produces Brochure, Useful Tips for Maintaining Septic Systems
November 2008 – With funding from Environment Canada’s Ecoaction and Science Horizons programs, Intervale produced and distributed an informational brochure for homeowners and rural businesses that outlines practical and money-saving tips for maintaining septic systems. Intervale intern Virginia Ford, a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Marine Institute’s graduate program in water quality monitoring, authored the brochure and distributed it to municipalities and small communities all across the province.
The brochure includes tips for prolonging the life of a septic system, how to spot warning signs that the system may be failing, and provincial regulations governing the installation and use of on-site septic systems. The brochure also provides information on who to contact in case of problems with a septic system and useful web site addresses where one can learn more about septic system maintenance.
